Semi-Charmed Life Revisited

1 Aug

I love the late 90’s and early 2000’s music. I always think the music back then was a better than today’s. Lady Gaga? Katy Perry? Justin Bieber? Ewww! Not my type!

Late 90’s and early 2000’s was the era of the alternative rock, pop rock and boyband/girl bands. Who would forget Backstreet Boys, Boyzone, Spice Girls? What about bands like Hanson, Matchbox 20? Coldplay? Foo Fighters? Incubus? Korn? They sure ring a bell for those who were born in the early 80’s.  I’m sure many can relate about watching MTV during their teen years. But there’s a particular song of particular band I’d like to talk about.

Remember Semi-Charmed Life by 3RD Eye Blind?

“Dooo Dooo Dooo Dooo Dooo Dooo Dooo Dooo Dooo….”

Familiar?

I always like that song. It’s upbeat, catchy and just sets you in a good mood.  I don’t remember the first time I heard it but I only remember liking it since it hit the radio.  I like the song too much I saved the mp3 in my computer and play it whenever I am in the good mood or want to be a good mood.

And although I very much know the chorus and a few lines in the verses, I didn’t pay too much with the lyrics. I just knew that there are some sort of depressing lines in the song despite its upbeat tune like  the “She’s got her jaws now locked down in smile but nothing is alright” and the “The four right chord can make me cry.”  But I was just too caught up with the catchy tune that makes me want to dance or bang my head a little. And it’s only lately when I actually decided to take a look at the lyrics because I feel challenge upon memorizing the sung-like-a-rap-song verses and sing a long with it.  I even listed “Memorize Semi-Charmed Life song” as one of the items under my 1000 Things To Do Before I Die.

So I googled the song… and I was shocked! The catchy and upbeat song I love talks about SEX and DRUGS (METH)! And it took me more than a decade to actually know it! How LAME! So all along, I was singing about doing METH and raunchy SEX?

Well I knew some parts of the song is about sex and some verses talk directly about doing meth (“doing Crystal Meth will lift you up until you break”), but I didn’t know the song was entirely dedicated to those two.  My interpretation was then strongly confirmed by the video from 2008 that I found in youtube, with Stephan Jenkins, Third Eye Blind’s lead singer, actually admitting that it is a dirty song! Watch the video below:

Oh well, I’m almost done memorizing it (I just need to brush up a little), so maybe I can cross it out from my 1,000 things. But still, I’m still in shocked how it took me more than 10 years to actually know what the song means.

Here’s the video with the lyrics:

Out Of My Hands

19 Nov

“Out Of My Hands is a frightening song to sing because it acknowledges the truth that scares me that I don’t have anything to do with God’s love for me. And I can’t make Him love me more. I want to be responsible for some of that someday. And the truth is, the gifts God has given us, the gifts God has given me, the gifts God has given us, the community, His church are just that, they’re gifts. We haven’t done anything to earn it. “- Steve Mason of Jars of Clay.

Indeed. Well said.

Out Of My Hands is one my favorite songs out of Jars of Clay‘s newest record, The Shelter. I already fell in love with the song the first time I heard it because it just reminded me of God’s love and how things are really ‘out of my hands’ since the start. It’s humbling. I thank God for Jars of Clay’s gift of writing beautiful music since 1995.

Out of My Hands – Jars of Clay

I wasted the rescue,
abandoned the mission.
I’ve failed by my own hand
and watched it all go wrong

You said you could save me
that I couldn’t save myself
You said that you loved me
no matter what I’ve done

When the light is gone
and life is just a day we take
Still the fight goes on
to give my heart away

And It’s out of my hands
It was from the start
In light of what you’ve done for me x2

You lifted my head
Set me apart

In light of what you’ve done for me
This is what you’ve done for me
It’s out of my hands

You grow where the light is
Like trees in the highlands
We’re bent by our own plans
to keep us in the dark

And I act like an orphan
Forget that you found me
but you came like a whisper
and saved me with a spark

When the light is gone
and life is just a dare we take
Still the fight goes on and on
to give my heart away

And it’s out of my hands
it was from the start
in light of what you’ve done for me x2

You lifted my head
Set me apart

In light of what you’ve done for me
this is what you’ve done for me

It’s out of my hands
It’s out of my hands

There’s nothing in the world that I can offer
nothing in the world that I can stand apart

Apart from you, apart from you

There’s nothing in my life,
nothing in my life that you haven’t given to me

It’s out of my hands
It was from the start

In light of what you’ve done x2

You lifted my head
You set me apart
In light of what you’ve done
In light of what you’ve done for me

Ohhh It’s out of my hand x2
In light of what you’ve done for me x2

You lifted my head,
set me apart
In light of what you’ve done for me
This is what you’ve done for me

It’s out of my hands x2
Everything I have Lord
Everything I gave
It’s out of my hands x2

Oh it’s out of my hands

One Love by: Blue feat. Asian Artists

20 Sep

I always love this song by BLUE. I am not exactly a fan of boyband, but growing up in the 90s, I have liked a few of some boybands’ songs. And one of them is this. I particularly love this version of the song where they collaborated with some Asian artist. Cool.

Would you lie with me and just forget the world?

If I lay here,

If I just lay here,

Would you lie with me

And just forget the world?
